Key Points

  • Long-term investors have increased their Bitcoin sales as its price nears an all-time high.
  • The average Bitcoin transaction size on Coinbase has surged with the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs.

As the price of Bitcoin nears an all-time high, long-term investors have ramped up their sales. Analysts from Glassnode have observed a surge in the monthly sales rate to 257,000 Bitcoin.

Of this total, 57% originates from Grayscale’s GBTC. Sales rates have seen a weekly increase of 20%, and a monthly and quarterly rise of 44% and 55% respectively. This uptick is the most significant since the 2021 bull market.

Capital Flows and Transaction Sizes

Analysts also studied the flow of capital to centralized platforms (CEX) and noticed a spike in the average Bitcoin transaction size on Coinbase. This increase to 4.3 BTC coincided with the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. Historically, since 2019, the range has been between 0.2 BTC and 1 BTC.

As Bitcoin reached an all-time high, unrealized gains for holders hit 228%. The cost for long-term investors to purchase Bitcoin is $20,700, whereas, for short-term investors, it stands at $45,800. Analysts suggest that this group typically increases spending as new all-time highs are reached, with distribution speeding up until a cycle top is formed.

Whale Activity and Profit Zones

Experts from IntoTheBlock have noted that during the all-time high update, all Bitcoin holders were in the profit zone, with no wallets making a loss or breaking even. The rise in Bitcoin was also marked by high whale activity. Over the past week, the volume of transactions on the blockchain exceeding $100,000 reached $174.2 billion.

The sharp price rise and demand for Bitcoin are primarily attributed to significant capital inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January. Another contributing factor is the expected halving in April.
