UK Government Holds Large Bitcoin Sum
Analysts from Arkham Intelligence have identified a Bitcoin address linked to the UK government.
As of March 4, this address reportedly holds 61,245 Bitcoins (BTC), equivalent to roughly $4.1 billion.
Confiscation from Chinese Citizens
In 2018, the UK police allegedly seized these Bitcoins from two Chinese individuals.
Zhiming Qian, one of the individuals, is said to have bought cryptocurrency using funds from an investment scam between 2014 and 2017.
Qian had reportedly been evading Chinese authorities for a significant period.
Arkham Intelligence clarified that the UK government only gained access to these Bitcoins in July 2021.
Changes in UK Crypto Regulations
In late February, it became known that the UK government was planning to ease restrictions on cryptocurrency confiscations.
By April 26, 2024, a new law will be enforced that broadens the power of the National Crime Agency to seize crypto assets linked to suspected illegal activities.
This law will allow local law enforcement agencies to freeze crypto assets related to criminal activities, even without a conviction.
