Thailand Cracks Down on Illicit Crypto Platforms to Tackle Cybercrime

Key Points

  • Thai authorities have banned unauthorized cryptocurrency platforms to enhance efficiency in internet crime combat.
  • The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand is tasked with providing information about these unlicensed platforms.

Thailand’s government has taken action to ban unauthorized cryptocurrency platforms. This move aims to boost the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime. The decision was announced on April 19.

Regulation Enhancement

The Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Committee held a meeting where it directed the Thai SEC to provide the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society with details about unlicensed digital asset service providers. This information is intended to help prevent access to these platforms.

The SEC has assessed the implications for users and will give them time to manage their accounts before they are unable to use the site. The SEC has urged users of these platforms to withdraw their assets promptly. The Thai SEC has also taken note of similar actions taken by other governments, such as India and the Philippines, to block unauthorized platforms.

Striking a Balance

Regulators in Thailand are working to find a balance between promoting the cryptocurrency economy and preventing fraud. On one hand, they have allowed institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals to invest in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and have permitted retail investors to invest unrestrictedly in digital tokens backed by real estate or infrastructure. On the other hand, they have mandated that custodians have a backup plan in case of any mishaps.

On March 13, the Thai cabinet approved a tax exemption for cryptocurrency earnings to enhance the nation’s competitiveness in digital finance. This strategic decision targets earnings from investment tokens, exempting these profits from personal income tax calculations, thereby offering investors a significant advantage.
