Key Points
- Jian Wen is in court on charges of laundering Bitcoin as part of an alleged $6 billion scam.
- Wen’s defense argues that her employer, Yadi Zhang, the alleged mastermind, manipulated her.
Jian Wen is currently facing charges in a London court. She is accused of laundering Bitcoin, allegedly part of a $6 billion investment scam. Her defense, however, argues that she was manipulated by the true mastermind of the scheme.
The Allegations
According to the prosecution, Wen was working for Yadi Zhang. They allege that she converted Bitcoin to cash through intermediaries and used the funds to purchase a flat in Dubai. Wen, however, maintains that she was not aware that the wealth of her employer was obtained through criminal activities. This comes after over £1.7 billion in Bitcoin (BTC) was seized from her residence.
The Defense
The defense’s stance is that Zhang manipulated Wen. Defense lawyer Mark Harris describes Zhang as the genuine mastermind behind the scheme. He referred to Zhang as a “super villain”. He added that no one in their right mind would willingly participate in such a scheme. Harris paints Wen as an unintentional scapegoat in Zhang’s scheme, which allegedly deceived approximately 130,000 investors across China through sophisticated investment vehicles.
Zhang, who came to the U.K. in 2017 using a passport from St. Kitts and Nevis and fled in 2020, was described as a “master of deception” by the defense. They emphasized Wen’s previous employment at a fast food restaurant before she started laundering money for Zhang in 2017. This, they argue, shows how she transformed into an unsuspecting suspect under Zhang’s influence.
Harris disclosed Zhang’s alleged objective of establishing a kingdom in Liberland, a territory between Croatia and Serbia. This required Jian to be the unsuspecting key player in her intricate scheme.
