Key Points
- Proton, the Swiss-based firm, has launched a self-custody Bitcoin wallet called ‘Proton Wallet’.
- The Proton Wallet allows users to send Bitcoin via email and aims to simplify access to Bitcoin.
Proton, a company known for its dedication to privacy and its services such as Proton Mail and Proton VPN, has unveiled a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet.
Named the ‘Proton Wallet’, it currently only supports Bitcoin (BTC). As a self-custody wallet, it allows users full control over their private Bitcoin keys. The company has plans to include support for other cryptocurrencies in the future.
Fiat Currency and the Future
Proton’s founder and CEO, Andy Yen, has mentioned the possibility of adding fiat currency capabilities. However, this would require a Swiss banking license, which is currently not feasible.
In a blog post introducing the Proton Wallet, Yen explained that the wallet aims to simplify Bitcoin access for everyone. The wallet allows users to send Bitcoin via email, leveraging Proton’s existing email infrastructure and encryption key management system.
Accessibility and Security
The Proton Wallet will also support users with email accounts from third-party providers such as Gmail and Outlook, provided they have a Proton Account.
Proton is aiming for wide accessibility with its wallet, enabling users to buy BTC in over 150 countries. To facilitate this, they are partnering with on-ramp providers like Banxa. With over 100 million users across its suite of products, the launch of the Proton Wallet could potentially trigger a new wave of Bitcoin adoption.
Yen also highlighted the wallet’s security features. The Proton Wallet boasts built-in two-factor authentication and an optional wallet passphrase. This passphrase is separate from the user’s login information, adding an extra layer of protection.
Additionally, the AI-powered security program, Proton Sentinel, is set to further enhance account security. This program, previously used to protect activists and journalists from cyberattacks, will now be deployed to protect Proton Wallet users.
