Jack Dorsey, the previous CEO of Twitter (now X), has generously donated $21 million to OpenSats, a platform focused on funding the development of Bitcoin (BTC).
OpenSats, a nonprofit organization, shared the news of Dorsey’s substantial donation on May 4, stating that these funds will significantly enhance the resources for open-source projects, providing essential funding to innovators worldwide.
Dorsey’s Support for Bitcoin
Dorsey confirmed his donation while replying to a post by technology expert and whistleblower Edward Snowden, who was advising Bitcoin developers about the importance of integrating privacy measures at the protocol level.
The donation from Dorsey also includes funds specifically designated for a legal defense for Bitcoin developers. This reflects the continued support of the Square CEO for the Bitcoin community and his confidence in its potential to transform finance and technology.
Funding Allocation
OpenSats also revealed that it’s allocating $15 million to its General Fund, $5 million to the Nostr Fund, and $1 million to operational budgets.
The General Fund is a pool of donations from individuals and organizations used to support Bitcoin-related free and open-source projects and contributors.
The Nostr fund aids the development of Nostr, a decentralized social network that uses relays for sending and receiving messages. The platform’s popularity has skyrocketed, boasting 16 million users, with half a million reportedly logging in daily.
OpenSats has a track record of supporting various ideas to help expand the Bitcoin world and other open-source projects. They’ve backed 21 teams in the past, such as BTCPay Server, which allows users to process payments on their own server, and the Bitcoin Policy Institute.
OpenSats encouraged open-source developers in need of funding to apply. The organization is inviting developers from all over the world to seize this opportunity by visiting opensats.org/apply.
