Key Points

  • Max Keiser criticizes Argentine President Javier Milei’s approach to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.
  • Argentina introduces new legislation affecting all entities providing and receiving crypto-related services.

Max Keiser, who advises El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele on Bitcoin matters, has criticized Argentine President Javier Milei’s approach to cryptocurrency.

Milei, who took office in December, has implemented aggressive economic policies to stabilize Argentina’s struggling economy and counter the ongoing devaluation of the Argentine peso.

Conflict Over Cryptocurrency

Despite Milei’s positive reception from the wider cryptocurrency community, his stance on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has been criticized by some Bitcoin proponents, including Keiser.

Keiser, along with other Bitcoin maximalists, argues that Bitcoin is separate from the broader crypto ecosystem. This belief contributes to the criticism of Milei’s opposing viewpoint, which is reflected in Argentina’s recent cryptocurrency legislation.

New Legislation and Controversy

The Comisión Nacional de Valores, Argentina’s securities regulator, recently introduced a law requiring all Virtual Assets Services Providers operating in the country to register. This legislation affects all entities involved in crypto-related activities, including buying, selling, trading, receiving, or sending crypto tokens.

Keiser has criticized this new law, arguing that it’s a “rookie mistake” for Milei to group Bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies. He contends that this has set back Milei’s economic reform efforts.

Keiser asserts that El Salvador’s President Bukele has a better understanding of Bitcoin. For example, El Salvador introduced its digital asset issuance legislation last January, which covers services related to all digital assets except Bitcoin. Meanwhile, Milei has suggested dollarizing the Argentine economy, despite the failing peso.

El Salvador has openly supported Bitcoin, becoming the first country to make it legal tender in 2021. In contrast, Milei has not yet adopted this approach.
