Key Points

  • London Stock Exchange (LSE) will begin accepting cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes (ETNs) listing applications from April 8.
  • Trading of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs will commence on May 28, pending regulatory approval.

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has announced plans to begin accepting listing applications for cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes (ETNs) starting April 8. This move signifies a crucial step in the integration of digital currencies into the U.K.’s financial market.

Trading to Begin in May

Following the application process in April, the LSE has plans to start trading crypto ETNs from May 28, subject to approval from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The introduction of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs aims to attract a broad range of issuers and investors, similar to the success Bitcoin ETFs have seen in the U.S. since January.

To facilitate a smooth launch, the LSE has set deadlines for issuers intending to list their securities. By April 15, they must submit the required documentation, including a base prospectus for FCA approval.

Understanding ETNs and ETFs

Similar to Bitcoin ETFs, ETNs are traded on a stock exchange, providing investors an accessible and regulated avenue to gain exposure to the crypto market. The key difference between ETNs and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) lies in their structure. ETNs are unsecured debt securities supported by the issuer’s credit, while ETFs are funds that hold the actual assets they track, offering direct exposure. This implies that ETNs carry a credit risk that ETFs do not, as the value of an ETN depends on the issuer’s ability to pay, while the value of ETFs is directly linked to the assets they own.
