Grove City College, a private liberal arts institution in Pennsylvania, has announced plans to rename its School of Business in honor of Howard E. Winklevoss. This decision comes in the wake of Winklevoss’ generous donation of $4 million in Bitcoin.
Winklevoss and Grove City College
Winklevoss, an alumnus of the college, graduated in 1965. He has had a successful career as an academic and entrepreneur, with a background in actuarial science and business technology. He has founded several companies, including Winklevoss Consultants and Winklevoss Technologies, which was sold for $125 million in 2023.
The college, known for its commitment to free-market economics, does not receive federal funding. It relies heavily on private donations like the one made by Winklevoss to continue providing quality education.
Winklevoss’s Interest in Bitcoin
Winklevoss developed an interest in Bitcoin after his twin sons, Tyler and Cameron, introduced him to it in 2012. The twins are well-known figures in the cryptocurrency space, having co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini. Howard saw a connection between Bitcoin and the principles of sound money, which he first studied at Grove City College under economist Dr. Hans Sennholz.
The use of Bitcoin for charitable donations is becoming increasingly common. Despite its reputation as a speculative digital asset, Bitcoin’s decentralized nature, which allows for transactions without a central authority, has made it an attractive option for many.
The renamed Winklevoss School of Business will focus on disciplines such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. Winklevoss hopes that his donation will inspire future students to strive for excellence and make a positive impact in their respective fields.
