Ethereum Breaks $3K Barrier, Surpasses Bitcoin Despite Hefty ETF Infusion

Key Points

  • Ethereum’s price surpassed $3,000 on Feb. 20, outperforming Bitcoin’s 22% growth.
  • ETH 2.0 staking deposit trends suggest the gap between Ethereum and Bitcoin might increase.
  • Ethereum Outperforms Bitcoin

On Feb. 20, the price of Ethereum exceeded $3,000. This growth outpaced Bitcoin‘s 22% increase. Observations of ETH 2.0 staking deposit trends this week indicate that this gap may continue to grow.

Bitcoin’s price initially outperformed Ethereum’s during the early days of the 2024 market rally, following the media excitement about the Bitcoin ETF approval.
However, this market trend reversed at the beginning of February.

Investors making long-term bets could potentially capitalize on rising ETH 2.0 staking deposits and a decreasing market supply to drive a rally above $4,000.

Despite record-breaking ETF inflows into Bitcoin, Ethereum’s price performance has managed to surpass Bitcoin’s.

    Investor Confidence in Ethereum

Since the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the Bitcoin ETFs on Jan. 11, BTC has seen a surge in interest from institutional inflows.
Despite this, Ethereum’s price performance has managed to surpass Bitcoin’s.

The historical price chart shows that Bitcoin’s prices increased 24.2% in February, rising from $41,864 to a monthly peak of $52,985.
In contrast, Ethereum’s price saw a 33.7% rise from $2,241 to the $3,000 milestone on Feb. 20.

Investors have been staking coins in anticipation of gains from a potential ETH ETF approval.
This has been a significant factor in Ethereum’s impressive price performance, which exceeded Bitcoin’s in February.

In the past week, investors have deposited 504,799 ETH into ETH 2.0 staking contracts, pulling coins worth over $1.5 billion.
This has increased the total staking deposits on the Proof of Stake (PoS) network to 30,064,242 ETH.

A significant increase in staking deposits during a bull market is a positive trend for any PoS network.
This trend indicates that most large Ethereum investors are looking to play the long game despite high prices.

A $1.5 billion increase in ETH staking while prices are at a 2-year peak shows a surge in investor confidence and commitment to the network’s security.
If this trend continues, the decrease in market supply amid increasing market demand could see Ethereum’s price extend its lead over Bitcoin.

    Ethereum’s Price Forecast

Data-driven insights from market trends suggest that Ethereum’s price could continue to rise towards $3,500 in the coming weeks.
However, historical accumulation trends indicate that Ethereum faces significant resistance at the $3,200 level.

The global in/out of the money (GIOM) data shows that 12.9 million existing holders acquired 4.74 million ETH at a minimum price of $3,212.
This is the largest group of holders that bought Ethereum above the current prices.

A decisive breakout above $3,200 could potentially lead to a larger upswing towards the $3,500 mark.
However, if the price falls below $2,500, this prediction could be invalidated.

In this scenario, the 5.2 million addresses that acquired 4.1 million ETH at a minimum price of $2,548 could create a significant buy-wall.
