Key Points

  • Ruja Ignatova, known as the “Cryptoqueen,” disappeared in 2017 after scamming investors out of $4.5 billion with her fake cryptocurrency, OneCoin.
  • There are unverified allegations that Ignatova was murdered by an organized crime boss, but she remains on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list.

Ruja Ignatova, a Bulgarian-born financier educated at Oxford, vanished in October 2017. Known as the “Cryptoqueen,” Ignatova masterminded a fraudulent scheme involving her fake cryptocurrency, OneCoin, which scammed investors out of a staggering $4.5 billion.

Her sudden disappearance has led to numerous theories and speculations. Some suggest she was escaping law enforcement, while others hint at something more ominous.

The Cryptoqueen’s Disappearance

Ignatova’s fraudulent operation, OneCoin, was launched in 2014. Unlike legitimate cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), OneCoin had no blockchain technology behind it. Instead, it was a pyramid scheme that encouraged members to buy coins and recruit more people.

By 2017, authorities were closing in on Ignatova, leading to her sudden disappearance. She fled from Sofia, Bulgaria, to Athens, Greece, and hasn’t been seen publicly since.

A police informant’s report suggests that Ignatova was murdered in late 2018 on the orders of Hristoforos Nikos Amanatidis, also known as Taki, a suspected Bulgarian organized crime boss. However, this remains unverified.

Despite these allegations, Ignatova still appears on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, indicating that the agency believes she may still be alive.

The OneCoin Scandal

Ignatova managed to pull off one of the biggest crypto frauds in history with the help of Frank Schneider, a former spy and the head of Luxembourg’s intelligence agency. After leaving the intelligence service, Schneider founded Sandstone, a private investigation firm that provided critical support to Ignatova’s scheme.

In April 2021, Schneider was arrested near the Luxembourg border by French police. However, he disappeared in May 2023, just before his scheduled extradition, suggesting he may have powerful allies helping him evade capture.

Public sentiment around Ignatova is mixed. While some admire her audacity, others express disdain for the devastating impact of her scam on average investors. Theories about her fate abound, ranging from her being alive and in hiding to her being murdered.

The mystery surrounding Ignatova’s whereabouts and the truth about her story keeps the world on edge, wondering if justice will ever be served or if she will remain a ghost of the financial underworld.
