Key Points

  • Crypto.com CEO, Kris Marszalek, predicts short-term selling volatility due to the upcoming Bitcoin halving event.
  • Despite potential short-term effects, Marszalek remains positive about Bitcoin’s long-term market impact.

Kris Marszalek, the CEO of Crypto.com, has shared his thoughts on the forthcoming halving event of Bitcoin. He expects this event may cause some short-term selling turbulence. However, he maintains a positive outlook on the long-term implications, based on historical trends in Bitcoin price movements after similar network updates.

Historical Trends and Market Uncertainty

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Marszalek pointed out the historical pattern of price increases following halving events. However, he also acknowledged the uncertainty brought about by Bitcoin’s recent record-breaking performances. In March, Bitcoin’s price reached an all-time high of $73,750 (as per CoinMarketCap data), marking the first instance of such a record high before a halving event.

While the possibility of short-term selling as the fourth halving approaches is not dismissed, Marszalek believes it will result in a “positive development for the market” in the long run. He anticipates “pretty decent action within the six months following the Bitcoin halving.”

Halving Impact on Mining and Market Reactions

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin is trading at $63,132, a 14% drop from its March highs. The fourth halving, scheduled for April 20, will slash the daily supply of Bitcoin miners’ rewards by half: from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, affecting mining profitability.

Various figures in the crypto industry have differing opinions on the effects of the halving. Arthur Breitman, co-founder of Tezos, sees it as a “reduction in security budget,” implying potential benefits in addressing overpayment for security. Conversely, Arthur Hayes, former head of BitMEX, anticipates BTC price drops due to limited dollar liquidity during the period. Fred Thiel, CEO of Marathon, suggests that the halving’s impact may already be factored into the price, referring to successful spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) approvals.
